THE MALCOLM LATIF SHABAZZ LEGAL CLINIC is named after the martyred first male descendant of Malcom X & Betty Shabazz. In the wake of Betty Shabazz's passing, Young Malcom was erroneously charged with the arson that caused his grandmother's death. While Malcolm Latif was actually innocent, at just 12 years old and in the absence of family, he was pressured to accept a conviction plea deal by his own public defender to a charge that there was zero evidence to substantiate. Malcolm navigated through the ups and downs of this nation's broken criminal justice system and emerged out of it as a degreed scholar and human rights activist. El Hajj Malcom Latif traveled the world studying Islam, Sociology, and Human Rights like his grandfather and quickly became a rising star. Attorney Beason III and Malcolm Latif met through Tupac Shakur's manager/friend and Activist/Islamic scholar Sheikh Hashim Alauddin at the 6th Annual Muslim Congress Conference in Miami, FL on July 4th, 2010. Attorney Beason III & Malcolm Latif quickly formed a brotherhood and spent the next month living together and studying in Miami. Malcolm Latif professed his innocence to Attorney Beason III as they studied and bonded over everything from their love for hip-hop to their shared desire to become lawyers and address society's ills. The two brothers of the struggle pledged to bring back the concept of activist lawyering, and to work together forever towards establishing the reality of human rights for all.
Attorney Beason III & Malcolm Latif remained close friends and worked towards their oaths until Young Malcom's untimely death eight years ago. Malcolm Latif was martyred under suspicious circumstances in 2013 while visiting deported labor activist in Mexico City, Mexico.
